Ford Atlas truck debuts at Detroit auto show

Ford Atlas conceptFord revealed its Atlas concept pickup truck at the Detroit auto show on Tuesday. The concept truck is powered by a next-generation EcoBoost engine that uses technologies such as engine start-stop to help improve fuel economy. The concept previews the next generation of the F-150 pickup.

Another first on a Ford truck is the 360-degree point-of-view camera. The system provides a bird’s-eye view of the truck to help when parking in tight places.
LED lights are used on the side mirrors and cargo box to provide lighting with minimal battery drain.
The cargo area gets a host of new technologies and features, starting with the dual-purpose tailgate step and cargo cradle. The step extends upward from the tailgate when closed to equal the roof height, creating a cargo storage rack. A space in the roof allows for long cargo, such as wood planks, to run from the roof to the cargo cradle/tailgate step and be secured.

Ford says the system helps eliminate maneuvering guesswork and speeds up trailer hookup by showing visual cues on the display screen inside the cab. The Atlas also has a trailer backup assist system. Ford hasn’t released any details on the system.
Finally, a ramp is stored under the cargo box and can quickly be set up for loading items into the truck bed.
