Hyundai’s HCD-14 Genesis debuted Monday at the Detroit auto show. From it’s Audi-esque grille to a cool headlight and taillight treatment, it looks like the next Genesis may be a bit more avant-garde than the outgoing car.

We’re expected to believe that Hyundai Design North America chief designer Christopher Chapman actually said, “We instilled HCD-14 with a premium-sport 4-door coupe road presence. Its sleek and lightweight silhouette does not punish the wind, but uses fluidic precision with dramatic surfacing that conveys natural restraint. Inside, a driver-centric cockpit prioritizes dramatic sculpture over infotainment button overload. Laminated and milled-wood detailing delivers a fresh, topographical map-like visual interest throughout the cabin-length center console.”
Wading through a sea of marketing speak, we find that Hyundai is proposing a novel system for controlling the car’s infotainment and HVAC systems using “3-D hand gestures” and “eye-tracking.” Hyundai is also promising an engaging driving experience and the HCD-14 is powered by Hyundai’s 5.0 Liter Tau V8, which is backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission.
UPDATE: Hyundai’s John Krafcik just informed members of the press that the HCD-14 was not a preview of the next Hyundai Genesis. That runs counter to what Hyundai has told us about the HCD-14 in the past, and it certainly makes all the Genesis badging that adorns the car look weird.
